VI. Xak Precious Package: The Tower of Gazzel (Spoilers)
Prologue
The introduction of Tower of Gazzel visits a scene between several demon characters that have been watching over Latok Kart and Rune Greed's progress through their adventures in Xak I and Xak II. They discuss a method of eliminating them once and for all by using a shapechanger and setting a trap for the two God descendents at the Tower of Gazzel, a unique tower that was originally built for the protection of a powerful seal on the ancient demon Gazzel, a demon with unimaginable power comparable to destroying an entire mountain in a single attack. Gazzel rampaged during the War of Sealing that first divided the world into three parts until he was eventually defeated and sealed away. Using Latok and Rune, the demons plot to resurrect Gazzel using Latok and Rune's power.
Introduction
After Latok Kart defeated Gospel during the events portrayed in Xak II, he and his friends are intrigued by rumours of a demonic tower and a man looking like Latok roaming its vicinity. Pixie journeys ahead of Latok's group to find the tower of Gazzel while Latok and Fray make their way on foot. Latok asks if this is the right way and Fray tells him that they are following the Mayor's directions exactly. They arrive at the tower to find Horn Ashtar and Fell Bell waiting at the entrance. It is rumored that the tower contains a power source for the demons. Pixie did research as well, traps/monsters. Pixie goes with Latok and they enter the tower. After solving some puzzles and gathering a few key items such as a sunstone tablet and a moonstone tablet, a drawbridge lowers allowing them to enter into the inner sanctum of the tower known as the "Maze of Fear". Latok finds key 1 and a teleportation key of earth which allows him to teleport back to this area of the tower from outside of the tower (save point). A voice speaks to Latok calling out his name and tells him that he'll await him at the top of the tower to test his strength. Latok fights a Lizard Demon boss who uses a boomerang as his main weapon and continues on. Eventually he finds a chamber containing a powerful artifact known as Airia's Ring however when attempting to remove the ring, Latok finds himself encircled in a flame trap preventing escape unless he places the ring back. A group of fallen rocks and debree block Latok's path but with Fray as a party member, she uses a lightening scroll to blow the rocks apart. Latok finds various statues that inform him of various traps and puzzles placed throughout the tower, his first clue is to solve mystery of the sea of flames. Further on Latok finds a Pendant containing a engraving of "Rune and Estina" and a fire-gauntlet stuck in the waterfall that he uses Rabby to locate. As Latok ascends to the next group of floors, he finds a Teleport Crystal of Fire and solves a puzzle having to do with pressing several Wooden planks that align the floor simultaneously allowing certain shutter doors to open and close. Latok opens a secret wall an upon entering, he encounters the second boss. Again the same voice speaks to Latok presenting him with another challenge to face in that of a giant harpy. After the battle Latok finds Rune injured and they teleport back to Fell so that Rune can rest and heal his wounds. Latok gives Rune back the pendant he lost and asks Rune why he was at the tower since he had thought he had given up on adventuring. Rune simply evades Latok's question and tells him something vague in that he is exploring the tower for his own personal goals and he joins the party. Latok takes Horn with him this time and Horn translates an inscription on a statue that appears to be written by the original builder of the tower, in an Eastern oriental language. Another Statue aids Latok by providing a key to unlocking yet other puzzle: 3 steps for 5 steps back. Full circle.
Latok proceeds into a Water filled area of the tower and finds the Water teleportation crystal. Fell Bow appears before Latok to this area when it is later revealed to not be Fell Bow, but that of the shapechanger. The Shapechanger turns into the form of Latok and blasts him with a burst of magical energy causing Latok to fall into a trap. However Latok manages to survive the trap and presses onward. Latok discovers a set of three doors that give Latok several bits and pieces of information, however only one is telling the truth and if Latok chooses any of the two doors that are lying, he'll enter into a trap. After carefully eliminating which of the doors is telling the truth he continues on to find more floors associated with the element of water and find the Water Teleport Crystal #2. His path becomes blocked with another rock and they have to take a detour. Rune and Latok enter the chamber of a demon calling herself the water queen, who in turn tests their strength in battle by having the two of them fight against a gigantic crab demon. After the battle, the water queen praises them on their success and introduces herself as Al Acrila. Rune takes a step back after hearing her name as he has met her before on one of his previous quests. Continuing forward Latok locates a ministral's flute. Eventually Al Acrila's voice speaks to them again and tells them that Aria, Rune's daughter is currently a prisoner of tower and that the only way to save her is to make their way to her chamber. As Latok and Rune make their way to Acrila's chamber they commence a battle that results in Acrila's death. Afterwards a man's voice calls out to the two of them telling them that even though they were victorious over Al Crila, the battle will prove to be more challenging when it is time to face him. Rune and Latok find the frightened Aria who explains that Rune's wife, (and her mother) Estina has also been captured by the demons and is currently a hostage in the tower. They all teleport to safety outside the tower and Latok asks Rune to explain what is going on and how is it that the knows these two demons. Rune tells Latok of how he had once done battle with Al Acrila and a man named Gill Berzes over three years ago and that he had thought he had seen the last of them. Runes suspects that the demons are doing this as a matter of exacting revenge against him. Aria tells them both that she overheard the demons talking about reviving an ancient demon known only as Gazzel, a demon strong enough to be able to destroy an entire mountain in a single attack.
Latok gives the ministral's flute to Horn and he plays it in front of a specific statue that had an inscription on it that spoke of a ministral. Almost as if the statue itself were to come alive, a spirit infuses with the statue telling them that the spirit inside the statue is that of Powell Kasim, Master Engineer Kashoko Saiten's apprentice. Long ago the demon Gazzel was sealed underneath the tower. Years later the King of Wavis had come to the tower and the royal family inhabited it for 10 long years. Two years ago a powerful demon came to the tower, destroyed the Wavis soldiers and has occupied it ever since. Saiten and Powell were forced to develop traps and mechanisms, turning the tower into a Maze of Fear. They killed Powell, and the last thing he saw was that they evacuated Saiten as they still needed him for other experiments concerning harnessing the power of the blue stone. They took his flute of which Powell's spirit was bound to and hid it. Powell Kasim offers to help them but requests that should they find his remains somewhere within the tower to renunite the flute with it so that he can rest in peace. As it turns out Powel was known as a great poet and musician and Horn offers to ensure that this request be carried out.
As Latok and Rune ascend the tower they discover a secret passage between a row of statues that lead to the operation switch for the water floodgate which they activate. Water pours through the grates and into into the lower fire area extinguishing the sea of flames in the room below, containing a chest containing the right-half of an ancient scroll and the third key, as well as a clue leading to a secret room hidden in a veranda on the outside of the tower.
Further up the tower Latok and Rune enter into an area that is attuned to the Wind Element. There they find various Guiding statues and wind puzzles that they must solve in order to proceed through the labyrinth. Eventually they reach an outside balcony of the tower where Latok meets Gill Berzes who has been waiting for them. Berzes summons a Green Wyvern to attack them and a boss battle commences. After the battle Berzes tells Latok that he will be waiting for Latok and Rune on the fifth floor of the tower for a final showdown.
Journeying on they reach another floor, this one being the Heaven floor and after finding the Teleport Crystal Heaven and Powell Kasim's remains, Latok reunites Powell's flute with his body and receives the Heaven Ornament. Further down, Latok finds a human-sized mechanical doll that he recognizes from his previous adventure as being created in the likeness of Master Engineer Kashoko Saiten. The doll speaks telling Latok that he has made many terrible traps and mechanisms throughout the Tower of Gazzel and the heaven floor is the center. His final work lies in a room referred to only as the "Heaven-Room". In this room one can control the light and darkness through the medium of the Heavenly Pedestal. But it requires four ornaments to activate it; only then will Latok be able to advance further. Latok finds all four heavenly ornaments and sets them into place in the heavenly pedestal. Switching the device on switches the room between light and dark polarity versions of the room. He enters a room filled with the Light's incarnations that can only be seen or hurt when the light is off. Latok speaks with the spirit of Powell again and Powell tells Latok that even though the demons were forcing Kashoko Saiten to develop deathtraps within the tower, he was not an evil man and he left a particular statue that remains loyal to the Royal Family and those bearing a royal crest. Powell's spirit moves on and finds eternal rest.
Latok and Rune move up to the fifth floor of the tower where they find themselve at a crossroads where the paths split apart. At this point they have to choose which way and only way they will proceed. One way nets more treasure while the other one is full of difficult demons that will are hard to fight. A statue says that Latok should use the Wisdom of the sky-god to help decide. Depending on which of the two paths chosen, Latok and Rune fight their way through some tough battles, discover a hidden walk-through wall and find that their path is impeded by two statues resembling the same kind of barrier ancient technology presented from the Vicksvorm statues of Xak I placed by the Royal Family of Wavis. They find that they will need a Red Jewel set in a royal crest in order to pass through the statues. Eventually they discover a talking mimic chest and the Heaven Key 0 and enter into an area where they find a gray haired young woman who has been held prisoner inside the tower. She offers to show them to a hidden area of the tower. Latok accepts and she leads Latok straight into a trap revealing that she is the shape changer from earlier. After battling through an ambush, Latok finds another key, key #4 and a Royal Crest that seems to be missing a red jewel needed to pass the gate. Eventually Latok and Rune make their way back to the Vicksvorm gate with the crest in hand however the red jewel is still missing from it. Just to see if it would work, Latok uses the red jewel from Rune's pendant instead and sets it into the crest which seems to work, allowing them to pass through the statues.
Latok and Rune enter the Heaven chamber where they confront Berzes and the fake Latok shapechanger. Rune and Berzes catch up on the events that happened three years before and caused Berzes to lose his right eye in battle. Berzes tells Rune that his wife, Tina is under Zegraya's care, another more powerful demon in the tower who plans to sacrifice her to the demon Gazzel. Rune and Latok are able to defeat Berzes and he tells them that they are worthy opponents and have earned his respect. He gives them the teleport crystal of darkness, allowing them to access the sealed rooms at the bottom of the tower where Gazzel is located. Together, Rune and Latok use the crystal and teleport to the final area of the tower to deal with Zegraya and the shape changer.
The shapechanger in the form of False Latok await them. He explains that his master needed a perfect soldier to kill Duel's descendent, so he was created for that purpose. He is the work work of Zegraya the creator to become the perfect soldier. Together Latok and Rune defeat the shapechanger. Before his death he mentions that Gazzel's ritual has begun, and with Gazzel on the demon's side once again, the world of Xak will face an era of darkness and the god's descendants will all perish.
Inside the chamber where Gazzel has been sealed, Latok and Rune find Zegraya who has been waiting for their arrival. He tells them that Zomu Dizae ordered him to do whatever was necessary to eliminate Duel's descendants and they've fallen into his trap all too easily as he intends to revive Gazzel and use the power to eliminate them on the spot. Latok attacks Zegraya and a fiercesome battle commences, but in the end Zegraya begins to start losing the battle and holds Tina, Rune's wife up as a hostage shield in order to buy time for the completion of Gazzel's revival. Gazzel's power fills Zegraya, but Latok's friends arrive on the scene to even the score and are able to paralyze Zegraya long enough to rescue Tina while Fray ignites him on fire using her ultimate technique "Flame Bird" spell to finish him off. Rune and Latok tell everyone that they should get to safety so that they can finish off Gazzel before it's too late. At that moment, what is left of Zegraya's body merges with Gazzel and the tower begins to collapse. Gazzel emerges in a form that is gigantic and takes up most of the entire seal chamber, but end the end Rune and Latok are able to defeat Gazzel as a team.
The tower of Gazzel falls apart with a quickness and everyone stands on the outskirts of the tower waiting and hoping for Latok and Rune's safe return. After awhile they begin to give up hope that they made it out alive, but their doubts are eased as Latok and Rune finally make their way out of the ruins of the tower. Everyone congratulates them over their victory over Zegraya and Gazzel and are happy that peace has finally returned to the World of Xak, however Latok tells them that Zegraya's final words have started to trouble him in that possibly an even greater battle may lie ahead. In addition, he hopes that when the time comes, he will be able to count on all of them to join the fight as he would never have been able to succeed if it wasn't for their help.
